MLB’s 2020 trade deadline is approaching, and it’s set for 4:00 p.m. ET on Monday, August 31 this time around. The deadline is usually on July 31, but the Covid-19 pandemic caused that date to be adjusted to fit the new 60-game season.
While teams have been able to make trades after the trade deadline in the past through a waiver process, that option was eliminated ahead of the 2019 season and won’t be available to clubs in 2020. Teams will only be able to add free agents following the deadline. Players must appear on an active roster before 11:59 p.m. ET on September 15 to be eligible for the playoffs.
Here’s what’s going on in MLB’s trade market now.

Trade rumors
Blue Jays talking to Marlins about Jonathan Villar, sources tell The Athletic. Unclear where discussions stand. Angels’ Andrelton Simmons not currently an option for Jays.

Two teams who have been involved in the Mike Clevinger sweepstakes say they're now out, but when pressed, say they simply won't raise their last offer. The leading candidates to land him: #Padres, #WhiteSox, #BlueJays, #Yankees.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 31, 2020
Source: The #Twins are working aggressively to trade for a starter today. Dylan Bundy and Lance Lynn are among the options they have considered. Minnesota has lost five straight and dropped to third place in the AL Central. @MLB @MLBNetwork
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) August 31, 2020
Marlins getting a lot of hits on closer Brandon Kintzler. But despite recent hitting woes, they are in playoff position, haven’t given up and need pen themselves. Their position: he stays. They do have extra rotation arms such as Urena and Caleb Smith who could go.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 31, 2020
Padres appear to be frontrunners for Mike Clevinger, but source said the Braves also remain in the mix.
— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) August 30, 2020
Cleveland is definitely trading Mike Clevinger by tomorrow's deadline, but it's still unknown where he's going, with teams still upping their offers. They have requested players physicals from at least two teams, but NOT the #Padres, who appear no longer to be the favorites.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 31, 2020
Yankees have talked to Brewers about Hader but no belief there’s any traction at all there yet. Yanks have checked in on Clevinger, too, but no belief anything’s close there either. There’s still tomorrow but there appears to be big gaps in talks for those two, at least.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 31, 2020
Brewers are getting tons of calls on hard-throwing RHP Corbin Burnes but have little inclination to trade him. More likely to possibly go: Brett Anderson and David Phelps, whose value is enhanced by having a contract with a team option for 2021
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 30, 2020
DBacks open to trading not only closer Archie Bradley, but also center fielder Starling Marte, sources tell The Athletic. Both players under club control for only one more season after this one. Team could move Ketel Marte back to CF, or possibly play Daulton Varsho in that spot.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) August 30, 2020
In addition to Lance Lynn, the Texas Rangers have been discussing outfielder Joey Gallo in potential trades, sources tell ESPN. The price on both is high, and it's why one GM said "the Rangers hold the keys to the deadline." If they do sell, it's impact guys in pennant races.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) August 30, 2020
Among players in whom the Rays are showing interest, according to sources: Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris…and, ahem, Rangers right fielder Joey Gallo. Padres also have shown interest in Gallo, along with seemingly every other available player with a heartbeat!
