Report: ROY candidate Jesus Luzardo tests positive for Covid-19, Mike Fiers cleared for practice

The A’s will be without one of their young guns the next couple weeks, at least.

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo has tested positive for Covid-19 and will have to self-isolate for two weeks, according to beat writer Susan Slusser. Additionally, starter Mike Fiers was cleared to workout and while it is unclear if it was coronavirus-related, he would have been delayed if he’d had close contact with a positive case.

The A’s had canceled workouts over the weekend due to a delay in getting test results. They received the results Monday evening, according to Slusser, which allowed them to have position players engage in a a Monday evening workout.

Luzardo is among the favorites to win the Rookie of the Year award, but this hurts his chances. He can keep working out in isolation, but even if he only misses the minimum 14 days, he could miss out being part of the rotation the first week of the season. He could work his way back in quickly, but it all depends on if he exhibits symptoms or is otherwise delayed in returning to action.
