Dodgers SP David Price opts out of 2020 MLB season

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without a key member of their starting rotation as pitcher David Price is opting out of playing in the 2020 MLB season. Price announced the news on Twitter, deciding it is in the best interest of his health and the health of his family.

This was going to be Price’s first season with the Dodgers, and his first in the National League. He came to LA as part of the Mookie Betts trade over the offseason. In his final season in Boston, Price made 22 starts and finished 7-5 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 107 ¹⁄₃ innings pitched.

He was going to slot in as the Dodgers third starter, behind Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. Julio Urias and Alex Wood slotted in behind him and will move up in the rotation.

Prior to the pandemic, Price was due a 2020 salary of $32 million. His prorated salary was going to be $11.9 million. He is due $64 million over the course of 2021 and 2022.
