Vladimir Guerrero Jr. preparing to play first base for Blue Jays

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. played on the hot corner during his rookie season with the Toronto Blue Jays last season, but he could add a new position to his repertoire in 2020. Manager Charlie Montoyo says Guerrero will focus on developing his skills at first base during camp Friday, but he could also still play at third base or serve as a DH moving forward, according to beat writer Keegan Matheson.

There has been speculation about the possibility of Guerrero changing positions for some time, as he been a glaring defensive liability. Moving him to first base would cut down on his poor fielding by giving him on the easiest bag to cover while using him as a DH would hide him completely.

Travis Shaw is the player most likely to replace Guerrero at third base. He only batted .157 last year while appearing in 86 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, but hit more than 30 home runs in each of his previous seasons.

Guerrero will be draftable at third base in fantasy but will become eligible as a first baseman once the season is underway. He will need five starts or 10 total appearances at the position to qualify as a first baseman, according to Yahoo Sports’ adjusted fantasy baseball rules for the 60-game season. Guerrero batted .272 with 15 home runs through 123 games as a rookie.
