The New York Yankees’ Spring Training has not gotten off to a great start. Starting pitcher James Paxton is sidelined through at least April after back surgery, and outfielder Aaron Judge is dealing with a shoulder issue that has kept him out of spring batting practice. Now, starting pitcher Luis Severino is dealing with forearm soreness and has been shut down, according to ESPN’s Marly Rivera.
It’s been a slow go for Severino to get back since first dealing with discomfort after the ALCS. He was scratched this week from his second bullpen session and did not take part in fielding drills on Thursday, according to Rivera. General manager Brian Cashman said this injury is not related to Severino’s 2019 injuries.
Cashman would not rule out Severino opening the season on the team’s injury list, which would knock a second starter out of the rotation. Severino is currently projected as the team’s third starter behind Gerrit Cole and Masahiro Tanaka. The Yankees will open the season without Paxton, without Domingo German for his domestic violence suspension, and now potentially without Severino for an indeterminate amount of time.
