Tommy DeVito continues to write his Hollywood story with MNF win

Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. are joined by Charlotte Wilder to talk about the true underdog story playing out with the Giants.

The Tommy DeVito experience rolled on Monday night in a win over the Packers, and Charlotte Wilder joined Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. to talk about the Hollywood story DeVito, his family and now his agent, have been living.

DeVito led a game-winning drive in which he went 4-for-4 for 53 yards to get the Giants into field-goal range for the eventual game-winner as time expired to lift the G-Men over the Packers 24-22.

Not only did he deliver in the clutch, but his family delivered during the tailgate, giving “the whole Italian show” as his dad said. GoJo says the DeVito story has been overwhelming in the best ways possible. GoJo says he’s been wracking his brain trying to come up with a comp, but the closest he can come up with is that this feels like Linsanity back in 2012 with the Knicks. A biggest media market in America has been swept over in a very short amount of time. The only difference, GoJo notes, is this involves a whole family of the most Italian people on Earth apparently, leaning into the bit.

Charlotte says that the thing that happens with someone DeVito sweeps us all off our collective feet is that it is usually somebody we feel like we can relate to on some level or is not supposed to be there. It all feels real. She notes that as someone married to an Italian from New Jersey, she can relate when DeVito’s dad talks about picking up that pregame spread. It’s so real, Charlotte says, and so unpolished in a way that we’re not used to seeing in sports. And DeVito could not be in a more perfect market — this is where he’s from and where his dream is coming true. It’s a story tailor-made for Hollywood and we all better enjoy the ride while we can.

Speaking of enjoying the ride, that includes DeVito’s agent, Sean Stellato, who broke the internet on Monday night with his sartorial choices.

Senior agrees that it’s a great story, but we still don’t know where it’s going to end up. Senior points out that we know that top draft picks who don’t work out keep getting more chances (such as Zach Wilson, Mitch Trubusky). Guys like Tommy DeVito, he says, we don’t know how their Hollywood tale will end. The question is can he be a player? Can he put himself in a position to go into the Giants next year and be the solid No. 2?

GoJo says this is fun because there are no stakes — the Giants aren’t going anywhere, this isn’t what we dealt with last year with the 49ers and Brock Purdy. GoJo says it’s been a ton of fun and the Giants have won three in a row. While the Jets have appeared to be in turmoil, with Aaron Rodgers chastising the organization for the Zach Wilson leaks, the Giants on the other hand have a feel-good story in Italian food-reviewing Tommy DeVito taking the world by storm. The Giants, he points out, have actually played themselves out of a top draft pick, meaning they won’t get a top QB prospect and still have to deal with the existential questions surrounding Daniel Jones. But GoJo says that’s all suspended for right now as the team and its fans have some harmless fun with DeVito that has no real stakes attached.

Charlotte says it feels very Giants. She says it’s like they’re saying, “We’re going to give you something really fun and we might regret it next year.” She does think there is something deeper about DeVito and his family that goes beyond them being stereotypically Italian from New Jersey. It’s a family, and there’s a level of care, comfort and vulnerability that they’re all showing right down to DeVito opening himself up and admitting he still lives at home. Charlotte says there is something really warm and it feels nice to see the parents who used to bring orange slices to your youth game bringing 300 chicken cutlets to your NFL game. It’s just really cute, and really sweet, she says.

Plus, as Senior points out, DeVito is far from the only 25-year-old still living at home these days. It’s tough out there gang!
