After a short offseason, the PGA TOUR returns this week with the Sentry, which will be played at the Plantation Course (par 73, 7,596 yards, Bermuda greens) of the Kapalua Resort in Lahaina, Hawaii, which has been the host of this event since 1999. John Rahm (-27) recorded a two-shot victory at this venue last season but will not defend his title this week after the Spaniard signed with the LIV Golf league a few weeks ago. The Sentry features no cut and is a field of 59 golfers, that includes all the winners of last season – outside of Rory McIlroy, who elected to skip this event – and the players who finished inside the top-50 in the FedEx Cup standings last season.
The Plantation Course is a very long seaside track that is home to some huge greens and has 93 bunkers on the grounds. In fact, this course presents the largest putting surfaces of any PGA TOUR venue and is the third longest course used on the circuit. With the Plantation Course also home to some very wide fairways on top of its daunting length, this is a venue where being long OTT is an advantage, making bombers the best targets. Each of the past two winners at the Plantation Course have ranked top-five in both SG OTT and driving distance during their victories. Given the overwhelming size of the greens at this track, targeting strong putters is also a sharp strategy, as for back-to-back years, the winner of the Sentry has led their field in SGP.
The Plantation Course is the only par 73 that hosts a PGA TOUR tournament and this rare setup features 11 par fours, four par fives and three par threes. The four par fives rank as the four easiest holes on the scorecard and elite par five players need to be a priority this week. For three years in a row, the victor at the Sentry has finished the event top-five in par five efficiency.
Below, I break down three of my favorite DraftKings bargain plays for the Sentry, that all are priced under $7.5K.
Cam Davis ($7,100) – Davis is an easy choice at this low salary. At +5500, the 28-year-old boasts the best odds to win the Sentry on the DraftKings Sportsbook of all the players priced under $7.5K for DFS, and it is for very good reason. Davis finished T10th in his debut at the Plantation Course last season and currently sits at a career-best No.42 in the world golf rankings after carding six top-12 finishes in his last seven starts.
On top of being an elite driver of the golf ball, ranking top-13 in both SG OTT and driving distance over his past 50 rounds, Davis ranks seventh in par five efficiency during this time, setting him up perfectly for his return to the Plantation Course. Playing the best golf of his career, another top-10 finish at Kapalua is absolutely possible for Davis.
Mackenzie Hughes ($6,400) – Hughes is far too cheap and needs to be rostered at this low price point. The veteran has produced two top-25 finishes in three appearances at the Plantation Course and closed out the fall swing in impressive fashion with a T7 at the World Wide Technologies Championship and then a runner-up finish at the RSM Classic, which included a third-round 10-under 60, which ties Hughes’ career-low on the PGA TOUR.
The Canadian collectively gained strokes OTT and with his putter during both of these past two starts and brings outstanding upside relative to his cheap salary.
Luke List ($6,200) – List is a true bomber and his game sets up well for the lengthy Plantation Course. The veteran posted a T11 in his debut at the par 73 last season and ranks sixth in both SG OTT and driving distance when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds.
Plus, List has made eight consecutive cuts coming into this week when excluding his first-round withdrawal from the Rocket Mortgage Classic. During this run, List has recorded five top-25 finishes, including a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship. The 38-year-old has impressively only shot over par once in his last 24 rounds and is an elite value play at this near minimum salary, which is a whopping $2,100 cheaper than his last start. To put in perspective how underpriced List truly is, he carries +10000 odds on the DraftKings Sportsbook to win the Sentry this weekend, which are the same odds as Lucas Glover, who is far more expensive for DFS at $7,500.
