Fantasy Basketball Value Picks: Top DraftKings NBA DFS Bargain Plays for December 27

Garion Thorne breaks down his top DraftKings value plays for Wednesday’s NBA slate.

Just like everyone’s own personal clock, the NBA schedule has been messed up this week by the holidays, which is how we get a Wednesday evening with an unusually small six-game slate.

Still, that doesn’t mean it’s a boring six-game slate. In fact, four of the five highest-priced assets are either questionable due to injury or have already been ruled out. It’s going to be that kind of night.

Let’s dive into the madness and find some values.

C Paul Reed, Philadelphia 76ers at Orlando Magic, $4,800

Things didn’t go well for Reed on Christmas. While making his second start of the season due to the absence of Joel Embiid (ankle), Reed was limited to 17.3 minutes and 10.0 DKFP in the 76ers’ loss to the Heat. In fact, it was Mo Bamba ($4,000) who shined, collecting 18 points and six rebounds. Embiid has once again been ruled out on Wednesday, and I’m inclined to give Reed a second chance. The reason is two-fold. First, the game script went off the rails quickly for Reed on Monday, as the big man was almost in immediate foul trouble. That’s unlikely to happen two consecutive games. Second, Reed’s proven he can be productive with the right opportunity. The 24-year-old is averaging 1.00 DKFP per minute logged so far in 2023-24 — the fourth-best mark on Philadelphia’s roster. Bamba is fresh in people’s minds and he’s significantly cheaper. Zig when the public is zagging.

C Precious Achiuwa, Toronto Raptors at Washington Wizards, $4,900

We’ve talked about the Wizards as an amazing DFS matchup all season long, and that’s only become more true as time has passed. Since December 1, Washington ranks first in the league in pace by a wide margin (105.1), while the team also owns the NBA’s worst defensive rating across that exact same span (123.2). What does that mean for tonight’s slate? You’re going to want to have a couple Raptors in your lineups. Scottie Barnes ($8,700) is the clear place to start — and his salary is looking like a steal below $9K — yet where to go after that is a little more difficult. Personally, I’d take a serious look at Achiuwa. Not only is the former first-round pick averaging a very respectable 1.10 DKFP per minute played in 2023-24, but Toronto’s starting center, Jakob Poeltl ($5,600), has seen his role reduce drastically in recent games. If that trend continues on Wednesday, that should mean good things for Achiuwa.

SF/PF Derrick Jones Jr., Dallas Mavericks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers, $5,000

One of the many question marks clouding this slate is the health of Luka Doncic ($11,800; calf). After dropping 50 points and 15 dimes on Christmas, the Mavericks’ All-Star is questionable to suit up on Wednesday — which also happens to be the first leg of a back-to-back set. For me, there’s enough smoke here to assume that Doncic is going to sit. Obviously, that would create a scenario where all the secondary options on Dallas’ roster suddenly become viable DFS assets. In particular, Tim Hardaway Jr. ($6,400) and Dante Exum ($6,000) would be asked to carry ridiculous workloads; yet don’t forget about someone like Jones Jr. on the wing. The veteran has been playing a ton of minutes for Jason Kidd in recent weeks and Jones has responded by registering at least 30.0 DKFP in four of his last 11 contests. That includes Monday’s 23-point performance against Phoenix, where Jones took a season-high 18 field goal attempts. The man is on a roll.
