Fantasy Basketball Value Picks: Top DraftKings NBA DFS Bargain Plays for December 15

Garion Thorne breaks down his top DraftKings value plays for Friday’s NBA slate.

I have nothing interesting to say here, which is troubling considering we’re less than a third of the way into the NBA’s regular season. Uhhhh... Oxford defines value as “the regard that something is held to deserve; the importance, worth, or usefulness of something.” Do with that what you may.

We’ve got an eight-game featured slate. Let’s dive in.

PG T.J. McConnell, Indiana Pacers at Washington Wizards, $4,900

There’s no way around it. You have to get a piece of this game. Just days after Bucks-Pacers set the record for the highest NBA total in DraftKings Sportsbook history, we’ve got another contest with an O/U of 259. Wild. Obviously, the stars are the main focus for DFS. You’ll want to use Tyrese Haliburton ($11,300). You’ll want to use Kyle Kuzma ($8,400). You’ll want to keep an eye on the status of Jordan Poole ($6,400; ankle), who is questionable to suit up. However, if you need a cost-effective asset that’s priced below $5K, McConnell is your guy. The veteran guard has been picking up a couple extra minutes with the injury to Andrew Nembhard (knee), and a couple extra minutes is all McConnell needs to be productive. In fact, McConnell comes into Friday’s tilt averaging 1.30 DKFP per minute. To put that in perspective, Steph Curry is averaging 1.31 DKFP so far in 2023-24.

C Onyeka Okongwu, Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors, $5,000

This is a rematch of a game played on Wednesday, one where the Raptors defeated the Hawks by an eye-popping score of 135-128. The amount of points probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. Not only does Atlanta rank third in the league in pace (102.8), but neither of these teams has exerted an ounce of effort on defense in recent weeks. To wit, in December, the Hawks sit 28th in defensive rating (125.2), while Toronto slots in at 27th — allowing 124.0 opponent points per 100 possessions. I’d expect a shootout once again. All assets benefit from such a script, but take special notice of Okongwu on this slate. Atlanta lacks size outside of Okongwu and Clint Capela ($6,300), especially when De’Andre Hunter ($5,900; knee) is unavailable at power forward. Okongwu has played heavy minutes with Hunter sidelined the last two games, even sharing the floor at times with Capela. That translated to 30.0 DKFP in Wednesday’s loss.

SF/PF David Roddy, Memphis Grizzlies vs. Houston Rockets, $4,600

Another rematch of a game played on Wednesday. The Grizzlies were held to only 104 points in that loss, as the team dealt with the absence of Desmond Bane ($9,000; illness). It makes sense. Bane leads Memphis in both points per contest (24.8) and usage rate (29.7%). If he’s out again on Friday — he’s currently listed as questionable — there will once again be a ton of opportunity that opens up for the secondary characters on the Grizzlies’ roster. Two in particular that stand to gain: Roddy and Vince Williams Jr. ($4,300). The latter drew the second start of his career on Wednesday, but Williams is a low-usage guy. I’d much rather have Roddy in my lineups for only $300 more. In that 117-104 loss, Roddy’s 21.9% usage trailed only Jaren Jackson Jr. ($8,500) and Derrick Rose ($5,000) among Memphis players. Roddy also tied Rose for second on the team in field goal attempts (14), all while logging the second-most minutes (32.2). He’s just too cheap.
