The 2023 College Football National Championship is finally here. After a dramatic season of conference realignment, shifting powerhouses, cheating allegations, and edible mascots, the No. 2 Washington Huskies and No. 1 Michigan Wolverines emerged on top. The two undefeated teams will face off on Monday, January 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the game will air on ESPN.

Michigan (14-0) reached the national title game with a 27-20 overtime win over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl semifinal. The Big Ten champions were under fire for much of this season as a cheating scandal rocked the program and kept head coach Jim Harbaugh off the sidelines for the most important stretch of Michigan’s schedule. While quarterback JJ McCarthy and running back Blake Corum each had a phenomenal season, Michigan’s power truly comes from its defense, which ranks among the best in the country (if not alone on top). The Wolverines allowed just 10.2 points per game (1st in the nation) and 244.5 yards per game (1st in the nation) this season.

Washington (14-0) defeated Texas in the Sugar Bowl, 37-31, to head to the national championship in Houston. The Huskies, led by Heisman finalist quarterback Michael Penix Jr., are the offensive powerhouses of this matchup. While Michigan ranks at or near the top in most defensive stat lines, Washington leads the nation in passing yards per game (350) and ranks in the top 10 in points scored per game this season (37.6). The Pac-12 champions defeated Bo Nix and the Oregon Ducks not once but twice this season, and grabbed wins over Arizona, Oregon State, and USC, as well. Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk are the duo on the other end of Penix’s passes, and both have surpassed 1,000 receiving yards this year.

Here’s how to watch the 2023 College Football National Championship Game.
