College basketball picks: Seton Hall vs. No. 23 Providence

We go over the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook for the Pirates vs. Friars on Wednesday night.

NCAA Basketball: Butler at Providence Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The Seton Hall Pirates take on the No. 23 Providence Friars in a Big East matchup on Wednesday, January 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET from Providence, Rhode Island. The Friars enter as 6.5-point home favorites.

Seton Hall (8-5, 1-1 Big East) is coming off a tough 20-point loss to Xavier. However, in the previous game, they defeated No. 4 UConn 75-60. Their losses have come against Iowa, Baylor, Rutgers, and USC. The Pirates sit at 80th overall at KenPom and 66th in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Guard Kadary Richmond leads the Pirates’ offense with 15.2 points and 4.2 assists per game. Center Jaden Bediako leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game. Seton Hall’s offensive rebounding and second-chance points rank very highly among their peers — they average 12.4 offensive boards per game (8th in the nation).

Providence (11-2, 2-0 Big East) sits atop the conference standings after a perfect start to conference play. The Friars most recently defeated Butler, 85-75, and grabbed their biggest win of the season before that, beating Marquette 72-57. Their losses this season have come against Kansas State (OT) and Oklahoma, and they have also defeated Wisconsin and Georgia.

The Friars rank 42nd at KenPom. They are lower than expected due to their weaknesses on offense. Providence lands at seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency. They keep opponents to just 63.3 points per game (21st in the nation) on 54.7% shooting from the two-point range (17th in the nation). They also grab 28.2 defensive rebounds per game (8th in the nation) and record 5.9 blocks per game (9th in the nation).

However, averaging just 75.2 points per game, they don’t crack the top 100 in adjusted offensive efficiency. The Friars’ defense has not led them astray yet, but this could be a liability going forward as they continue to compete with top teams. Forward Bryce Hopkins leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.7 boards per game, making him one of three players averaging seven or more rebounds. Devin Carter leads the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game, and also averages 1.3 steals per game.

While Seton Hall was able to beat UConn, that game took place on their home court. The Pirates have yet to win a game on the road this season, and their offense won’t be able to overcome the stifling Providence defense.
