We break down the current playing status of Rafael Nadal during the Australian Open tennis tournament.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal recently announced his withdrawal from the 2024 Australian Open after suffering an injury during his last match at Brisbane International. After undergoing an MRI in Australia, Nadal stated he suffered from a micro tear on a muscle and will be flying back to Spain for treatment and rest.

The news came just a week away from the start of the tournament via social media on his X account.

Last year, he sustained a hip injury during the 2023 Australian Open. The injury hindered his performance which ultimately led him to end the tournament sooner than expected after losing in the second round. His injury persisted even up to the 2023 French Open, forcing him to withdraw to focus on his health. He ended up undergoing hip surgery which kept him off of the court for most of the year.

Will Nadal be retiring after this injury? It does not seem likely as the tennis player is still optimistic about his return to the court despite the circulating rumors on whether or not he is still physically capable of competing at this level.

“Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season,” Nadal wrote in another post on X.

With Nadal off of the court, #1 seed Novak Djokovic is currently the favorite at +100 to win this year’s Australian Open on DraftKings Sportsbook. #2 Carlos Alcaraz is second on the list at +350.
