The transfer portal is already quickly filling up with top quarterback prospects as the 2024 offseason begins, but Monday brought a unique portal entry from former Notre Dame and Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner, who has entered the transfer portal as a lacrosse player.

Buchner was Notre Dame’s backup in 2021 before taking on the starting role in 2022. However, he suffered a season-ending injury just three games into the year. Following the 2022 season, Buchner followed Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Auburn, where Rees accepted the OC position under Nick Saban. In Tuscaloosa, Buchner lost out on the starting job to Jalen Milroe, and had one start against USF in 2023.

The change of sport doesn’t come completely out of nowhere. Buchner played lacrosse along with football at The Bishop’s School in his native San Diego. However it is certainly unexpected from a four-star recruit who ranked as the No. 39 player in the nation coming out of high school.

Buchner still has at least three years of eligibility left, and could join a lacrosse team as early as this spring. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Buchner has not “ruled out football” entirely, but is focusing on lacrosse at the moment.
