With just two weeks left to go in the 2023 NFL season, mock draft season is beginning to pick up with more teams being eliminated being eliminated from playoff contention. Former NFL coach and scout Nate Tice released his latest mock for Yahoo Sports on Thursday and I’ll go over what he has slotted for the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

1. Drake Maye, North Carolina — Chicago Bears
3. Caleb Williams, USC — Washington Commanders
4. Jayden Daniels, LSU — New England Patriots

Tice is in the camp that has Drake Maye as the No. 1 QB in this class over Caleb Williams and you’re going to see the debate over these two prospects increase over the next few months. Tice calls him the “complete package” at QB, citing his athleticism and ability to avoid negative plays as key traits the makes him a can’t miss prospect. Maye being taken at No. 1 opens the door for the Commanders to select the hometown kid Williams at No. 3 while the Pats find their QB of the future in Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

Interestingly enough, these are the only three QB’s in Tice’s mock as Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix are nowhere to be found. With this being considered a QB-heavy draft, I think one QB-needy team is bound to use a first on either prospect.

First defensive player off the board?

Tice doesn’t have a defensive player being selected until No. 12, as he has Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins going to the Green Bay Packers. The top 11 picks in his mock are all reserved for mostly quarterbacks, offensive tackles, and wide receivers, with Georgia tight end Brock Bowers being the lone outlier. I understand that the league is built on offense, but it’s hard to envision a scenario where not a single defensive guy is taken before 12.

Offense vs. Defense

The first round of Tice’s mock is overwhelming skewed towards offense with 21 players being selected on that side of the ball. For all the talk surrounding the QB’s, it may be more accurate to view this as a hog molly draft as 11 offensive lineman are being projected by the former scout to hear their names called in the first round. Defensive players do have a good run in the middle of the first round, but the offense still shines.

Are there any running backs?

No and it will most likely stay that way for Tice throughout mock draft season. According to NFL Mock Draft Database, a running back isn’t expected to be taken until late in the second round.

Final thoughts

As I mentioned before, the Williams vs. Maye debate will heat up over the next few months, but I think Williams ultimately becomes the first QB taken off the board. And with the Bears showing a pulse late in the year, I’m continuing to believe that the team will ultimately stick with Justin Fields for another year and trade the No. 1 pick to a QB-hungry team like they did last year.
