While regular season fantasy football is ending for 2023, playoff fantasy football is around the corner. These types of leagues are typically done in the best-ball format, but there is a greater chance for variance with rules, so make sure you understand roster construction, point scoring, and if they are weekly matchups or the playoffs as a whole.

If you’re an avid fantasy football player, you may have to change your thinking when it comes to ranking your respective players. With it being Week 17, less than half the playoff field is solidified, so you are flying blind and trying to predict who will clinch. If you join a league that has weekly matchups, you also need to make sure that you don’t draft players from teams that will have first-round byes because a zero would be hard to overcome.

The Ravens, 49ers, Eagles, Lions, Dolphins, and Cowboys are all in the playoffs, while the Buccaneers, Browns, Chiefs, Seahawks and Bills are very close to clinching a playoff berth. Baltimore and San Francisco have the best odds for the respective No. 1 seeds, which would bring the first-round bye, so in weekly leagues, we are downgrading their players for now. The Jaguars currently sit atop the AFC South and have the Carolina Panthers in Week 17, but an injury to quarterback Trevor Lawrence has us slightly hesitant about his upside.

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson could be hoisting his second career MVP Award this season, but for now, he will focus on getting to the Super Bowl. If Baltimore beats the Miami Dolphins in Week 17, they will earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC, whereas if the Dolphins win, they will be the No. 1 seed. If you are playing in leagues that have one matchup for the entire playoffs, Jackson would be a great pick.

Are you a believer in Patrick Mahomes? The Kansas City Chiefs cannot earn the No. 1 seed and technically have yet to clinch a playoff spot. Mahomes is trying his best to keep his offense moving despite poor play from his wide receivers. Despite the down year for season-long fantasy football, the playoffs could see Mahomes revert to his usual dependable self. In the short-term, Kansas City likely will host in the first round at least which gives him even more upside.
