NFL DFS Showdown strategy: Jets vs. Browns

Captain’s Picks

Amari Cooper, WR, Cleveland Browns ($16,800)

Cooper has been on fire since veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took over under center. He has logged three straight games with at least eight targets and 77 yards receiving. Cooper set the franchise’s single-game receiving record with 265 yards and added two touchdowns against the Texans last week. He has a tough matchup this week with New York, allowing the fewest DFS points per game to opposing wide receivers, but his target share over the last three weeks is tough to pass up.

*Note: If Cooper is ruled inactive, switch in Jets RB Breece Hall ($16,500) into this spot.

Jerome Ford, RB, Cleveland Browns ($12,600)

Ford has now played in 15 games and has 743 yards with four touchdowns on the ground. He’s added 236 yards and three additional touchdowns on 40 receptions. Ford continues to lose some work to Kareem Hunt but should have the matchup in his favor for this game. The Jets allow the least DFS points to opposing WRs but the seventh-most to opposing running backs. Ford should see plenty of work, even if the New York defense keeps it close.

FLEX Options

David Njoku, TE, Cleveland Browns ($7,800)

Njoku has been another beneficiary of Flacco being under center. He has seen at least eight targets and six receptions in three straight games. Njoku has scored four touchdowns over his last three games. New York’s defense allows middle-of-the-road numbers to tight ends, but it isn’t enough to downgrade him in your lineups.

Riley Patterson, K, Cleveland Browns ($4,800)

Dustin Hopkins has been one of the best kickers in the league this season, but he is week-to-week with a hamstring injury. Patterson will take over as the starting kicker and has a good matchup this week. The benefit of picking the kicker comes when your team faces a solid defense, because it will likely lead to more opportunities for them. New York allows the fourth-most DFS points to opposing kickers.

Value plays

Jets D/ST ($4,000)

The Browns offense has new life under Flacco so this isn’t as obvious of an inclusion for your lineup. Flacco is also playing in a revenge game against one of his former teams, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Still, the Cleveland offense still allows the most DFS points per game to opposing defenses.

Allen Lazard, WR, New York Jets ($2,400)

*Update: Lazard will be inactive for the game. Swap in Jason Brownlee ($2,800) as a value play with upside. Brownlee has been a red zone option for New York, so he could pay dividends for your lineup even if he doesn’t have a ton of targets.

Lazard is questionable for the game, but if he plays, he would be the second wide receiver option behind Garrett Wilson. Cleveland’s secondary hasn’t been as good of late, so Lazard could end up with more upside than normal. You aren’t making this selection because you feel great about Lazard. He has enough upside that he makes sense to roster, and he will save you some money to free up more salary cap for players with either a higher target share or better matchup.
