At 7-7, the Denver Broncos do not control their destiny into the playoffs. They will need to continue winning, but with 10 teams currently sitting ahead of them in the AFC standings, Denver will need some other pieces to fall into place outside of their control.
The Broncos If you are a Denver Broncos fan, you’ll have a few games you’ll be paying attention to as they look to improve their chances of a playoff berth. Let’s assume they’re playing for a Wild Card berth and not the division title against the Chiefs in the AFC West.
Result: The Broncos lost in the closing seconds to the Patriots to drop to 7-8. Their playoff chances are at 4% according to ESPN analytics.
Bengals vs. Steelers
Result: Steelers beat the Bengals 34-11 to go 8-7, while the Bengals also go to 8-7. A loss by the Steelers would have helped more, but the Broncos still have an outside chance if they can win out.
The Steelers are currently tied with the Broncos at 7-7. While the Bengals are also ahead of the Broncos in AFC standings, this would give Denver a concrete bump up above the Steelers and place them among the 8-7 teams if they are able to win.
The Bengals are 2-point favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Texans vs. Browns
Result: The Texans lost to Joe Flacco and Browns 36-22. This is good news for the Broncos, as they could gain a game on the Texans in the wild card race if they beat the Patriots Sunday night. They would still lose the tiebreaker, but it would be a step forward.
The Texans currently sit at 8-6, and a loss to the Browns would put them at 8-7. The Broncos have a head-to-head loss against the Texans, so they wouldn’t jump ahead of them this week, but it would put Denver in a position to jump ahead of them after Week 17.
The Browns are 2.5-point favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Result: The Chiefs lost to the Raiders 20-14 on Monday. Kansas City drops to 9-7 on the season while the Raiders remain in the playoff hunt at 7-8.
