USC quarterback Malachi Nelson is expected to enter the transfer portal, per Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports. The news comes after the program hosted former Kansas State QB Will Howard over the weekend.
A five-star Class of 2023 prospect, Nelson was initially committed to Oklahoma before switching to USC following Lincoln Riley’s arrival to the program. The Los Alamitos, CA, native enrolled in the spring and spent the 2023 season backing up Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams. He only appeared in one game as a true freshman, making three pass attempts against San Jose State in Week 0. With Williams bound for the NFL, he was in line to compete with fellow backup Miller Moss for the starting job in 2024. However, the potential arrival of Howard has apparently changed that dynamic and he will look to take his talents elsewhere.
With plenty of years of eligibility, he should have a number of suitors. One team to possibly consider is San Diego State, who just hired Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis as its new head coach.
