The Iona Gaels and St. Joseph’s Hawks hook up for the Holiday Hoopfest in New York on Saturday both searching for a resume boosting win.

St. Joseph’s Hawks (-7.5, 139.5) vs. Iona Gaels

The Hawks have excelled in games away from home this season with a road win against Villanova along with an overtime loss at Kentucky on their ledger with the team 20th in the country in points scored on a per possession basis in games played away from home.

Both teams in this matchup have been more efficient on offense when away from home than at home with Iona, who entered Friday 202nd in the nation in points scored per possession, averaging 5.8 points more per 100 possessions in games played on a road or neutral court while St. Joseph’s is notching 6.1 points per 100 possessions more when away from home.

In year one of the coach Tobin Anderson era at Iona, the defense has started off shaky with the squad 156th in America in points allowed on a per possession basis with the driving force of the Gaels being their outside shooting with the team 49th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage away from home at 37.1%.

A tempo shifts may also be coming for Iona with Anderson’s coaching background. When Anderson was the coach at Fairleigh Dickinson last season the team was 114th in the country in possessions per game and prior to that, his teams at St. Thomas of Aquinas were consistently registering more than 80 points per game.

Though St. Joseph’s entered Friday 24th in the country in points allowed on a per possession basis, the team is allowing 20 more points per 100 possession when away from home than at home.

With Iona perhaps looking to play a bit fast coupled with both teams doing their best work on offense when away from home, the Holiday Hoopfest on Saturday will be giving both of these teams a lot of points to celebrate the Holiday Season.
