NFL playoff picture: Who to root for in Week 15 if you are a Pittsburgh Steelers fan

Week 15 is here and the Pittsburgh Steelers are holding one of the wild card berths. Who should Steelers fans root for to help their playoff chances?

The Pittsburgh Steelers head into Week 15 holding a wild card berth and sitting in the No. 6 seed. This has come as the team has stumbled in recent weeks. They lost Kenny Pickett to an ankle injury in Week 12, and have since struggled with Mitchell Trubisky at the helm. Since beating the Bengals in Week 12, they’ve lost home games to the Cardinals and Patriots.

Pittsburgh is tied with five other teams at 7-6 but holds tiebreakers over all the rest. They head into Week 15 with the common games tiebreaker over the Colts, conference record over the Bills and Broncos, and head-to-head over the Bengals (with one game to play between the two).

The Steelers need to get wins wherever they can, and this weekend against offers a huge opportunity. They travel to face the Colts and are a 1.5-point underdog at DraftKings Sportsbook. Pittsburgh finishes the season at home against the Bengals and on the road against the Seahawks and Ravens. It’s safe to say they really need a win over the Colts.

The Steelers control their playoff fate, but their fans have plenty to keep an eye on since the rest of the season is a difficult slate.

Saturday update: The Steelers lost an ugly one to the Colts on Saturday. Pittsburgh jumped on top 13-0, but did not score again in a 30-13 loss. Mitchell Trubisky was eventually benched for Mason Rudolph and they dropped out of the three wild card berths with the loss.

Ravens vs. Jaguars

Result: The Ravens beat the Jaguars 23-7. The Steelers have been eliminated from any chance of winning the AFC North.

The Ravens have a three-game lead on the Steelers, but Pittsburgh won the first game between the two teams. The Steelers need a lot from the Ravens to have a shot at the division title, but they’re not eliminated yet.

Baltimore is a 3.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Bears vs. Browns

Result: The Browns won on a field goal in the final minute. They move to two games up on the Steelers.

The Browns sit in fifth place and a game up on the Steelers. Pittsburgh and Cleveland split their season series, which moves the tiebreaker down to the division record. Pittsburgh is 3-1 while Cleveland is 3-2, so the Steelers can still move ahead of them in the tiebreaker if they can even things up before the season ends.

Cleveland is a field goal favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Vikings vs. Bengals

Result: The Bengals stormed back from a 17-3 deficit to beat the Vikings 27-24 in overtime. Cincinnati climbed a game up on the Steelers with the win.

The Steelers beat the Bengals in Week 12, which gives them the head-to-head tiebreaker for the time being. Pittsburgh hosts the second matchup in Week 16. Pittsburgh needs to pick up wins, so that Week 16 game will be enough to secure a firm position ahead of Cincinnati, but Steelers fans will be rooting for the Vikings.

Cincinnati is a field goal favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Broncos vs. Lions

Result: The Lions crushed the Broncos 42-17 to drop Denver to 7-7 in the playoff race. Denver remain tied with the Steelers, but are behind them in the tiebreaker.

Pittsburgh will not face Denver this season, so if they remain tied, it will come down to other tiebreakers. Since Detroit would only influence strength of schedule-type tiebreakers, Steelers fans are all about Detroit on Saturday.

Detroit is a 4.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Texans vs. Titans

Result: The Texans beat the Titans in overtime. Houston moves a game up on Pittsburgh.

The Steelers lost to the Texans in Week 4, but remain ahead of them with the same record because of division tiebreakers used to pare down the list of tied teams. If the Texans climb ahead of the Colts at any point and remain tied with the Steelers, Houston would get the tiebreaker edge. And so, Steelers fans are rooting for the Titans. The Texans are expected to be without QB C.J. Stroud. He’s still in protocol while WR Nico Collins has already been ruled out.

Tennessee is a field goal favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Cowboys vs. Bills

Result: The Bills beat the Cowboys 31-10 to go 8-6 on the season. They still are on the outside looking in and now the Steelers are looking over the Bills shoulders as their playoff hopes fade.

Pittsburgh will not face Buffalo this season, so if they remain tied, it will come down to other tiebreakers. Since Dallas would only influence the strength of schedule-type tiebreakers, Steelers fans are all about Dallas on Sunday.

Buffalo is a two-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.
