UCLA vs. Ohio State: Buckeyes look to bounce back after snapped winning streak

The Bruins and the Buckeyes meet in Columbus on Saturday.

NCAA Basketball: UC Riverside at UCLA Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The UCLA Bruins take on the Ohio State Buckeyes this afternoon as part of the CBS Sports Classic in Atlanta. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET from State Farm Arena and the game will air on CBS.

UCLA (5-3) suffered a 65-56 loss to Villanova in its most recent game, bringing them to a 1-2 record over their last three games. They kept Gonzaga close as November wrapped up, but ultimately fell by four points. The Bruins don’t have a quality win on their resume yet, and they lost to Marquette by two points in November.

The Bruins rank 44th overall at KenPom and 21st in adjusted defensive efficiency. They keep their opponents to 60.3 points per game, which ranks fifth among all teams. Their opponents shoot just 38.2% from the field, ranking 14th in the nation. They’ve been able to keep it close with top teams this season, but just haven’t quite made it over the hump. Forward Adem Bona and guard Sebastian Mack lead the Bruins’ offense, each averaging over 13 points per game.

OSU (8-2) saw a brutal loss against Penn State in their latest game. The Buckeyes were up 41-29 going into the half, and allowed the Nittany Lions to score 54 points in the second half to come back and win by three points, serving OSU their second loss of the season. They also have a loss to Texas A&M on their resume.

The Buckeyes rank 27th overall at KenPom and 14th in adjusted offensive efficiency. They rank seventh in the nation in three-point shooting, hitting over 40% of their shots from the perimeter. When they’re off, the difference is noticeable — in their earlier loss to Texas A&M this season, the Buckeyes were just 4-for-19 from the three-point line.

If the Buckeyes can stay consistent from the perimeter, then they can get the edge in this one. Their defense has some holes, but their offense has been stronger than UCLA’s this season. They will be looking to bounce back from the Penn State loss, while the Bruins have yet to find a quality win.
