Alabama vs. Creighton: Bluejays look to get back on track after major loss

The Crimson Tide and the Bluejays meet on Saturday.

NCAA Basketball: Central Michigan at Creighton Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The Alabama Crimson Tide take on the No. 8 Creighton Bluejays on Saturday, December 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET from Omaha, Nebraska, and the game will air on Fox.

Alabama (6-3) is coming off a close loss against Purdue. They fell 92-86 after going into the half with a two-point lead, marking their third loss of the season. The Tide have also lost to Clemson and Ohio State this year.

Despite the three losses, Alabama ranks 10th overall at KenPom and first in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency. They average 93.2 points per game — the second-highest scoring average in the nation — and rank fifth in the nation in three-point shooting percentage at 40.9%.

The Tide are led by guard Mark Sears, who averages 21.9 points per game. Grant Nelson adds 13.7 points per game and averages 6.3 rebounds per game, leading the team. The Tides’ win over Oregon has been their biggest yet, but they have not defeated a ranked team so far this season.

Despite their highly-ranked three-point shooting, the difference in two of their three losses has largely come from their performance at the perimeter compared to their opponents. Against Purdue, the Tide were outrebounded, but Ohio State and Clemson contained them from deep. In their win over Oregon, they were able to keep their usual momentum from the three-point line going.

Creighton (8-2) is fresh off a shocking blowout loss to UNLV. The Bluejays fell 79-64 against the unranked Rebels as heavy favorites, marking their second loss of the season. Creighton couldn’t find their footing at the three-point line and struggled to defend UNLV from the field.

The Bluejays’ only other loss this season came against No. 17 Colorado State, and it was a 20-point loss where they shot under 30% from the field. The Bluejays rank 12th overall at KenPom, landing in the top 20 in both adjusted offensive and adjusted defensive efficiency. They shoot 50.2% from the field on average, ranking 17th in the nation.

Baylor Scheierman leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.3 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. Ryan Kalkbrenner and Trey Alexander each average over 15 points per game. The Bluejays may be reeling from their unexpected loss to UNLV, and this Alabama team is no walk in the park. The Tide may not be ranked, but they are one of the highest-scoring teams in the nation, and Creighton may struggle to contain them on the perimeter. Alabama covers the spread.
