Update: Arizona has officially announced the release of Zach Ertz.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz has requested and has been granted his release, per J.J. Watt (who subbed in for ESPN’s Adam Schefter to break the news). Ertz is expected to sign with a contender as the regular season draws near its end.

Ertz was to Arizona midway through the 2021 season and his two-year tenure with the franchise has been plagued by injury. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 10 of last season and was placed on injured reserve with a quad injury just over a month ago. Trey McBride has emerged as the top tight end option in his place and with the Cardinals sporting the second-worst record in the league, both the organization and the three-time Pro Bowler agreed to mutually part ways.

With Ertz now free to sign with anyone off waivers, an obvious potential destination is his former team in the Philadelphia Eagles. The reigning NFC Champions could use some tight end help with Dallas Goedert suffering a forearm fracture earlier in the month and who better to turn to than the man who caught the go-ahead touchdown in their victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl 52? The Baltimore Ravens are another team that could use Ertz’s surfaces with Mark Andrews currently on IR with an ankle injury.
