It is a battle for the state of New Jersey on Monday with the St. Peter’s Peacocks going to Jersey Mike’s Arena, known by many still as The RAC, to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

St. Peter’s Peacocks vs. Rutgers Scarlett Knights (-15, 122)

While St. Peter’s has been effective in slowing down games, ranking 340th entering the week in total possessions per game, their perimeter defense allows opponents to put up big points totals on them, ranking 206th in opponent 3-point shooting percentage last season and 289th thus far this season.

As for the Peacocks offense, the team entered the week 311th in field goal shooting percentage, but make up for it on the glass with second chance opportunities. St. Peter’s is getting an offensive rebound on 41.1% of their missed shots, which is an offensive rebound rate that ranks fifth in the country.

Though the overall shooting percentage for St. Peter’s is low, they are converting at the free throw line, ranking seventh in overall free throw shooting percentage at 82.9% and making 85.7% of their free throws in road games this season.

Free throw shooting should come into play even more than in most college basketball games this season with St. Peter’s committing a foul in 33.4% of their possessions this season, which is the second-highest foul rate in the country.

Both teams in this matchup are averaging nearly the same amount of points per possession with St. Peter’s 187th out of 362 Division I teams in points per possession and Rutgers 190th in this category.

Monday’s game warrants a low total, but with Rutgers entering having scored at least 69 points in three of their last four games and St. Peter’s having surrendered at least 69 points in three of their four games this season, thus total in the low 120’s has gone too low.
