Update: I WAS WRONG. DISREGARD EVERYTHING I WROTE BELOW. CM PUNK DID, IN FACT, SHOW UP FOLLOWING THE MAIN EVENT OF SURVIVOR SERIES.

The WWE is back in the Chicago area this weekend with Survivor Series WarGames coming live tonight from Allstate Arena in the suburb of Rosemont, IL. With the show being in Chicagoland, many have wondered if Chicago native CM Punk will make his long anticipated return to the WWE tonight.

The answer: not likely.

It has been nearly three months since CM Punk was fired by AEW for his backstage altercation with Jack Perry at their All In pay-per-view in August. AEW President Tony Khan broke the news just 24 hours before All Out, another Chicago-based ppv where Punk was set to headline. Almost immediately, speculation began to ramp up if the star would make a return to WWE, the company he famously walked out of nearly a decade ago in 2014.

In the weeks following the firing, reports began to surface that Punk and the WWE were in talks about a possible deal. But WWE officials reportedly shot those rumors down and claimed there were no talks between them and the former WWE champion. Given Punk’s brash personality and the way his AEW tenure just ended, there has been a hesitation on the part of both WWE officials and top stars to bring him in unless they can ensure that no problems incidents will take place.

Given that the focus of tonight’s Survivor Series pay-per-view will be on the two WarGames matches, it’s hard to imagine where Punk would make a grand return if he were to appear tonight. Him appearing on WWE television over the next few months is unlikely as Wrestlemania season approaches, but this will be a topic of discussion that will persist well into 2024.
