In one of the most exciting finishes in Kentucky Derby history. Rich Strike, an 80-1 longshot, split horses at the top of the stretch and raced past favorites Epicenter (4-1) and Zandon (6-1). Rich Strike, trained by Eric Reed, was an Friday afternoon injury replacement into the race and ran out of the No. 20 post position with the No. 21 cloth.
The three-year old only had one win in seven starts and finished out of the money three times coming into Saturday’s race. The 80-1 long shot is the second largest in Derby history. Simplification (35-1) finished fourth making the 21-3-10-13 superfecta payout $321,500.10.
