Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano: Charlo becomes undisputed champ after 10th round TKO

On Saturday, May 14th, TGB Promotions will hold a big boxing PPV with Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles, CA hosting the event. There are 12 total bouts, with four being included on the main card. The card is highlighted by an undisputed super welterweight title fight between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano. The PPV will be available on Showtime in the U.S. with the main card starting at 9 p.m. ET. The ringwalks for the main event are scheduled for 11 p.m. ET but are subject to change depending on the length of the matches on the undercard.

Charlo enters with a 34-1-1 record and is currently holding the WBC, WBA and IBF super welterweight belts. This is the second time that he has faced Castano, with their first bout ending in a split decision draw in July of 2021. Before that bout, Charlo had won three fights in a row by knockout. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Charlo is the favorite with -210 odds.

Castano has a 17-0-2 record and is the current WBO super welterweight champion. His last fight was the split decision draw to Charlo but had won his two fights before that. Castano picked up the unanimous decision victory over Patrick Teixeira in February of 2021. Before that, he secured the fifth-round knockout against Wale Omotoso in November of 2019. Castano is a slight underdog with +170 odds.

Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano round-by-round results

Round 1: Charlo 10-9

Both fighters are feeling out their opponent. Not many punches were thrown in the first minute. Charlo puts together a nice combo with a heavy hook. Castano is starting to walk down Charlo and got some shots in. Charlo lands some nice body shots though as the round ends. Charlo ends the round with a left hook that pops Castano’s chin.

Round 2: Charlo 10-9, 20-18

Charlo starts the second round aggressively with a heavy combo. Castano gets a right hand through the guard and then Charlo counters with a body shot. Another right-hand hits Castano in the chin and he follows it up with a left hook to the head. Castano tries to get a combo going, but then Charlo sneaks in an uppercut behind the guard. Charlo wraps up and when they are separated he lands two uppercut body shots. Castano does pop Charlo with a left hand right as the round ends, but not enough to take this round.

Round 3: Charlo 10-9, 30-27

Castano looks like he wants to start the third round fast, but Charlo’s left jab keeps him at bay. Castano keeps moving forward while Charlo is on his back foot near the ropes and Charlo keeps wrapping up. Castano is the aggressor in this round and is landing more shots while Charlo is barely missing on big swings.

Round 4: Castano 10-9, 37-39

Charlo goes back to the jab and leans on it heavily this round. Castano gets some clean shots in including a right hand although Charlo is able to duck another. This round was great on both sides and I’m giving the narrow edge to Castano in this one.

Round 5: Charlo 10-9, 49-46

This fight is definitely more aggressive than their previous bout. Charlo continues using his jab to set up shots top the left side of the body of Castano. They trade shots but Charlo always seems to get an extra hit in. Castano tries to walk down Charlo again but he holds his ground and matches his offense. Charlo throws a lot of punches as this one is turning into a slugfest as the bell rings.

Round 6: Castano 10-9, 56-58

Each round has ended aggressively with the next starting slowly. Rather than coming after Castano, Charlo is back on his heels trying to set up counters rather than taking the fight to Castano. Castano seemingly stuns Charlo for a split second and follows it up with a nice combo with Charlo on the ropes. This one goes to Castano.

Round 7: Charlo 10-9, 68-65

In the last round, Castano was able to land combinations and he didn’t let Charlo counter at all. Charlo adjusted in between rounds and any time that Castano tried to mount some offense, Charlo responded with an uppercut or a big left hook. Charlo turned it on this round and it gets him the round win.

Round 8: Castano 10-9, 75-77

Taking a second just to acknowledge the great back and forth in this fight. I’m scoring it how I see it, but this one has been close throughout and has lived up to the hype so far. Charlo comes out jabbing, and it takes about a minute for Castano to get going. Castano is timing some sneaky right hands-on Charlo. He responds with offense of his own off the ropes, but Castano is controlling the distance in this round. Castano landed the cleanest shots this round, but Charlo seems like one big shot away from taking this.

Round 9: Charlo 10-9, 87-84

Both fighters came out swinging in this round. Charlo was against the ropes and they each exchanged blows. Charlo connects on back-to-back combinations. Castano is still moving forward, but isn’t throwing punches while doing so. Charlo’s jabs are back setting up his combos and even though they are being blocked, he is wearing down Castano.

Round 10: Charlo 10th round TKO

Castano tries to start aggressively. Charlo caught Castano on the chin with a left punch. Castano hits Charlo in the left side of his face and Charlo responds with a great combo. Castano continues his advancement and then Charlo comes back with a combo off the ropes. He comes off the rope again and he hits Castano who takes a few seconds to fall to the mat. Castano gets back up and Charlo is on him like a shark and hits him a few more times, dropping him again and the fight is waved off.
