UPDATE: Josh Taylor won a split decision over Jack Catterall. He won on a scorecard of 113-112 and 114-111 while Catterall took one card 113-112. Here are the scorecards.

Undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor returns to the ring Saturday afternoon in his first fight since unifying the division. Taylor faces Jack Catterall at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland on an ESPN+ event. The main card gets underway at 2 p.m. ET and the main event is expected to get started in the 5 p.m. hour.

Taylor is a heavy favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, installed at -1200 to win. Although Catterall is also undefeated, he is a +750 underdog. Catterall is 26-0 and has held the WBO Inter-Continental title in the junior welterweight division. This marks his first bout since November 2020 when he secured a points win over Abderrazak Houya.

Taylor unified the division with a unanimous decision win last May over José Carlos Ramirez. The favored outcome is Taylor winning by KO, TKO, or DQ at -180. Taylor by decision or technical decision follows at +165. Catterall’s odds include +1400 for decision or technical decision and +1800 for KO, TKO, or DQ.

Round 1: Catterall 10-9

Neither fighter got too busy in the first round, but Catterall was more productive with a couple nice shots landing. Taylor seemed a little antsy, which isn’t surprising given he’s fighting in his native country.

Round 2: Catterall 10-9 (20-18)

Taylor was a bit busier in the second round, but Catterall was still more productive. He led well with the jab and landed more two-punch combos. Things got a little feisty this round. Taylor was given a second warning for a rabbit punch and late in the round Catterall picked up Taylor by one leg to drive him back. The ref has controlled things so far, but this could get out of hand at this rate.

Round 3: Taylor 10-9 (Catterall 29-28)

This was a tougher round to score. Taylor had his best round thus far, landing a few notable shots, but Catterall kept busy. The ref stopped the clock at one point to warn them about the shenanigans. This is a round the judges could go either way on.

Round 4: Catterall 10-9 (39-37)

Taylor landed a big shot as Catterall thought there’d be a breakup, but other than that, Catterall had the better round. He was landing body and head shots in combination and continues to do so while Taylor is not landing combos.

Round 5: Catterall 10-9 (49-46)

This was Catterall’s best round thanks to him landing a combo that seemed to hurt Taylor. Taylor landed a big left in the last 30 seconds, but it was more of the same where he’s landing one shot and not combos. He keeps looking for the knockout and it’s costing him rounds.

Round 6: Catterall 10-9 (59-55)

This was another strong round for the challenger. Every time Taylor tries to charge in, Catterall is popping him. I don’t know if he’ll put Taylor down before the end of the fight, but he’s landing big shots. Taylor showed visible frustration after one such combo and this is a real struggle for him.

Round 7: Taylor 10-9 (Catterall 68-65)

This round could go either way on the scorecard. Taylor got a few more solid shots in, but not so much as to clearly win this round. But I do wonder if the judges are influenced by the fans when they get loud for Taylor. I think it’s reasonable to give Taylor this round, but we’ll see how it impacts other rounds.

Round 8: Catterall 10-8 (78-73)

This is turning into a must-KO situation for Taylor. Catterall knocked him down in the first minute of the round and controlled most of the round to get a key 10-8 win. It wasn’t a massive knockdown, but it was a clear shot to send down Taylor. It was the first knockdown of Taylor’s pro career.

Round 9: Taylor 10-9 (Catterall 87-83)

This was a tight round. Taylor landed a couple strong body shots and a head shot. Catterall responded well and the only real hurt came on an accidental headbutt. This was a tough call for me, but I lean Taylor barely.

Round 10: Taylor 10-9 + point deduction (Catterall 95-93)

We had a potentially huge turn here as Catterall received a point deduction at 1:26. This was a tight round that Taylor likely did just enough to win, but the point deduction makes it a potentially huge swing. The ref is exerting himself in this one, and while at times it’s a bit much, both fighters are getting chippy.

Round 11: Catterall 10-9 + point deduction (105-101)

Another big swing. The ref took a point away from Taylor for a hit after the bell. The announcers lost their minds over it in part because Catterall tapped him back, but Taylor’s pop to Catterall’s chest seemed like more than just a tap.

Round 12: Catterall 10-9 (115-110)

Neither fighter took command in the final round, but Catterall was the busier, more productive fighter in the round. The announcers appear to disagree with me thanks to a nice shot from Taylor.
