Netherlands and Argentina will meet in the second quarterfinal of the 2022 World Cup Friday with both teams looking to book a spot in the semifinal round. These teams met in the 2014 World Cup knockout stage in the semifinal, with Argentina winning in a penalty shootout. We’ve already seen one quarterfinal Friday go to a penalty shootout; will this one also get there?
Here are the latest updates from Netherlands vs. Argentina.
Netherlands vs. Argentina live updates
PENALTY SHOOTOUT
Luuk de Jong sinks his shot and we’re now tied 3-3 with one kick for Argentina left. Lautaro Martinez will take the final kick for Argentina. Martinez MAKES IT! Argentina are in the semifinal after winning another knockout penalty shootout over the Dutch and Netherlands will have to go home. Argentina will face Croatia in the semifinal.

Teun Koopmeiners puts one in for Netherlands and it’s now 2-1 Argentina. If Noppert doesn’t make a stop, it won’t matter. Gonzalo Montiel makes his shot for Argentina and the South Americans lead 3-1.

Messi takes the first kick for Argentina and he makes no mistake, giving his side a 1-0 lead in the shootout. This is his second goal from the spot in the match, although only the one in regulation will actually count towards his total.

It looks like Netherlands have won the coin toss and will kick first. Usually, the team that goes first tends to win. Virgil van Dijk is taking the first kick for the Dutch and he is DENIED BY EMILIO MARTINEZ!

120th minute - Noppert is on an absolute heater for the Netherlands, stopping a shot from the corner from Angel Di Maria and getting some luck as well. Attempts from Messi and Lautaro Martinez go wide, although Martinez did hit the post on his shot which could’ve been the winner. To penalties we go!

119th minute - Noppert denies Lautaro Martinez on another late shot and we seem destined for penalties here. It’s important to note we appeared destined for Argentina comfortably making the semifinal with 10 minutes left so anything can happen as long as there’s one kick left in the match.
116th minute - Lautaro Martinez fires a shot from inside the box but it hits Virgil van Dijk’s chest and goes out of the bounds. There’s appeals for a hand ball but it clearly hit off van Dijk’s chest so the Dutch won’t have to fret about VAR. They almost thought a second deflection on a build-up had gone in after Noppert initially knelt to stop what he thought was a low shot and had to stretch to get the rebound bounce, which went over the post.

110th minute - Messi tries to do it all himself off a free kick and while he did tee up his classic inside cut to put the ball on his left leg, he skied the shot. It’s still 2-2 with 10 minutes left in the second extra time.
End of first extra time - We haven’t much action in the first 15 minutes. It seemed like Netherlands were trying to calm down after an unreal high from stoppage time, while Argentina were trying to re-establish that this is in fact a real game. We should see some more aggression in the second extra time, because neither team wants to go to penalty kicks.
101st minute - Technically, this is the second time we’ve hit 101 minutes. Neither team has shown signs of the impact of the late goal. Netherlands have not been able to parlay their late momentum into more goals, while Argentina have maintained their composure after the collapse. We’ve seen fairly ordinary play for most of the first part of extra time.
90+10 minute - A TYING GOAL FOR NETHERLANDS! We are headed to extra time in yet another semifinal.

90+8 minute - There’s been some generic time-wasting but Argentina have held their own defensively against a Dutch onslaught. We’ve got a few more minutes of stoppage time left but Messi’s side appear to be headed to the semifinal.
88th minute - Leandro Paredes gets a yellow card for his sliding tackle on Nathan Ake and a scuffle breaks out with Netherlands players coming off the sideline to defend their player. Paredes gets a yellow card. This may have been some payback for Ake giving Messi a tough challenge but thankfully nothing big comes out of it outside some minor sparks.

83rd minute - NETHERLANDS PULL ONE BACK! Wout Weghorst get a header to go in and its now 2-1 Argentina. The pressure is on in the final few minutes.

73rd minute - Messi sinks the penalty and it’s 2-0 Argentina. The fans can feel a semifinal appearance barring a horrendous collapse.

71st minute - PENALTY FOR ARGENTINA! Acuna makes a run on the far left side and gets fouled just inside the box, giving the South American side a penalty. This is a huge moment in the match.

63rd minute - Messi nearly makes it two for Argentina off a free kick. Messi drew the set piece opportunity after getting shoved down by Virgil van Dijk. His shot sailed just over the crossbar. A big missed chance for the star.

59th minute - Argentina had a golden opportunity with Rodrigo De Paul making the big run on a counter attack but the through ball was not on target and De Paul wasn’t able to get off a shot. Netherlands will need to be careful as they push forward, since Argentina getting a second goal would be tough to overcome.
53rd minute - Argentina are finding some openings on the counter attack as the Dutch push forward in an attempt to get an equalizer. This second goal overall will be very crucial, and neither team wants to be the one conceding that score.
45th minute - Argentina gave up two more set pieces, with Emilio Martinez needing to make a save on the latest one. Argentina also picked up a yellow card on a blatant hand ball, so things are getting a bit careless for the South American side. Netherlands haven’t been able to take advantage but they will if they keep getting set piece chances.
41st minute - Messi has been a menace in the box, causing a lot of problems for Netherlands. He managed to get another shot off but it was right at the Netherlands goalkeeper Noppert. The Dutch had a chance on a set piece but Cody Gakpo couldn’t find a friendly head on the deliver in. It’s 1-0 Argentina but both teams are still pushing for that pivotal second overall goal of the game.
35th minute - GOAL FOR ARGENTINA! Messi makes a brilliant move in the final third and delivers a pinpoint pass for Molina, who makes no mistake in front of goal. Argentina lead 1-0.

32nd minute - One of the Argentina coaches has gotten a yellow card, likely for arguing with the ref while coming out of the designated coaches box. Neither team has been able to put together the final component of an attack, but the potential has been there throughout the match.
21st minute - Netherlands have found their footing and are starting to play the diagonal ball to cut through Argentina’s aggressive line. They haven’t put a shot on target yet but they’re putting the ball in a spot where Argentina are having to make a tough choice and often need defenders to recover to ward off the threat. That’s eventually going to push the line back and open up the midfield more for the Dutch.
15th minute - We’ve still got no goals but Argentina are threatening more often than Netherlands. In fact, Argentina are actually pushing their back line higher in this match, which has caused Netherlands to make some errant passes in the middle of the park. Argentina have yet to take advantage on the scoreboard but so far the tactic is working.
5th minute - Argentina have been moving forward more in the early going, as Lionel Messi has controlled play from the middle of the pitch. Argentina are hustling in the midfield, not allowing Netherlands to get up on ground passes. The Dutch might have to send some aerial passes just to keep Argentina on their toes.
Pregame - Argentina are slight favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook, priced at +120 on the moneyline in regular time. They are -160 to advance. Netherlands are +270 to win in regular time and +135 to advance out of the match. A draw is priced at +215. The lines have shifted a bit in favor of Netherlands this morning ahead of the contest. Both teams will play with three true defenders on the back line, so there could be a lot of goals in this one.
