Report: End of Sasha Banks’ WWE contract negotiated over summer

The saga between the superstar and the company may have been settled months ago.

The months-long saga between the WWE and Sasha Banks may have been settled for quite some time.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported on Thursday that the end of Banks’ deal with the company was orchestrated this past summer. Sapp credited Wrestling Inc’s Raj Giri’s initial report from June that the superstar had been released from the company shortly after her walkout. The news comes just a week after reports surfaced that she will appear at New Japan’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January. It should be noted that Banks is still listed on the company’s online roster, but it may just be a formality until her contract officially expires.

This potentially brings finality to the seven-month saga over the status of the “Boss” with the company. In May, both Banks, real name Mercedes Varnado, and tag team partner Naomi walked out prior to an episode of Monday Night Raw due to reported objections over the creative directions of their characters. The two were then stripped of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship and publicly admonished multiple times on WWE television over the next week.

Since the incident, months of rumors and speculation over their status with the company persisted as questions mounted over if/when they would return. With the aforementioned New Japan news coming out last week, it seemed inevitable that we would get confirmation that Banks had officially parted ways with the WWE. Naomi’s current status is still undetermined.
