Oct 15 update: The Mariners and Astros ended up playing 18 innings of baseball. Houston won the game 1-0. The 0-0 score through 17 innings made it the longest scoreless game in MLB postseason history. The Guardians-Rays game last week held the previous record at 14 12 scoreless innings.

The Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays are deep into extra innings in Game 2 of their Wild Card series in the 2022 MLB playoffs. With that in mind, what is the longest game in MLB postseason history? The Guardians and Rays will have a shot at the record if this keeps going any longer. As of this writing, the game is in the 14th inning and neither team looks like they want to win.

Update — The game is into the 15th inning and it’s the longest scoreless game in postseason history.

The longest game in MLB postseason history was back in the 2018 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. The game lasted seven hours and 20 minutes and ended with Max Muncy hitting a walk-off home run in the 18th inning to give L.A. the win. There were two other 18-inning playoff games, including Giants-Nationals in Game 2 of the 2014 NLDS and Astros-Braves in Game 4 of the 2005 NLDS.

As for Rays-Guardians, we’re almost at five hours as the game had a first pitch of 12:07 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon. We’ll try and monitor the situation and whether or not this ends up being the longest game in postseason history (and perhaps MLB history). There have been three games that have gone to 18 innings in history.

The longest baseball game in history was 26 innings between the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves back in 1920. The longest game in 2022 was just over 3 hours.
