There will be no cut line at the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

The PGA Tour holds four World Golf Championship events each year, and this week brings the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. The WGC tournaments are invite only and usually feature up to 70 of the best golfers in the world.

The field teed off on Thursday morning and included most of the best golfers in the world. The only golfer in the top ten of the FedExCup rankings to not participate is Jon Rahm.

Coming out of the first day, fifth-ranked Harris English is in first place having shot a -8. He holds a two-shot lead on Jim Herman, Carlos Ortiz, Matthew Wolff, and Ian Poulter. Seventh-ranked Bryson DeChambeau is tied for sixth at -5 and current top-ranked Collin Morikawa is tied for 13th at -3.

12 golfers finished the first round with a plus number, but they have no fear of being unable to compete into the weekend. Most PGA Tour events have a cut following Friday’s second round in which upwards of half the field is eliminated from competition. They start with 130 or 140 golfers and most tournaments head into the weekend with the top 65 plus ties. Given that the WGC events limit the field to 60 or 70 golfers total, they do not have a cut line. No matter how bad a Thursday or Friday might go for any of these golfers, they’ll get to stick around into the weekend — even Wilco Nienaber, in last place with his +6.

Coming into Friday’s second round, English is the favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, installed at +500 followed by DeChambeau at +700. Daniel Berger and Scottie Scheffler are tied at +1200 and Morikawa follows at +1400.
