The dominance of USA women’s basketball continued on Friday at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as the Americans defeated Serbia 79-59 to advance to the gold medal game on Sunday. It was the 53rd consecutive win in the competition for Team USA, who are 40 minutes away from their seventh-consecutive gold medal.
The Americans did it with defense, holding the Serbs to just 23/76 from the field, including 4/19 from three-point range, and forcing 12 turnovers.
Brittney Griner led all scorers and rebounders with 15 points on 6/11 shooting and 12 boards. Fellow post Breanna Stewart added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Chelsea Gray was the most efficient with 14 points on 5/6 shooting including 2/2 from downtown.
Any concerns that were out there about this not being the best USA Basketball team following an at-times sluggish performance against Australia in the quarterfinals appear to have been laid to rest. It looks like Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi will win their fifth-consecutive gold medals, and what might be the most difficult team sport roster to make in any Olympic event has done it yet again.
The Americans will play the winner of Japan vs. France in the gold medal game on Sunday. France is listed as a four-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook.
