Veteran PG Kyle Lowry has signed a three-year, $90 million contract with the Miami Heat in free agency, according to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo! Sports. According to Goodwill, the deal will be part of a sign-and-trade agreement. Lowry was an unrestricted free agent after completing a one-year, $30.5 million deal with the Toronto Raptors. He previously had a three-year, $100 million deal with Toronto before signing the one-year deal this past year.
Lowry has been a mainstay in Toronto after struggling to establish himself for much of his early career. The point guard was not a big name with the Memphis Grizzlies or Houston Rockets, but emerged as an All-Star during his time with the Raptors. He and DeMar DeRozan formed a dynamic tandem to take the franchise to new heights. Ultimately, DeRozan was traded for Kawhi Leonard ahead of Toronto’s first championship season. Lowry was hurt by the trade, but got rewarded with a title.
The point guard was in trade talks for much of last season and this season, but no deal was done. Lowry averaged 17.2 points and 7.3 assists per game this year while shooting 39.6 percent from behind the arc. In the last three years, he is averaging 16.8 points and 7.9 assists per game.
