If Mac Jones can look as good as he did against the Eagles backups in the regular season, we have a star on our hands. Jones looked poised while navigating the pocket and throwing darts. He even had yet another long pass dropped.

Here we’ll take a look at the workload for rookie QB Mac Jones in the New England Patriots Week 2 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles and how he performed during his reps.

Stats

13 completions on 19 attempts for 146 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions with one rush for three yards.

Analysis

Jones put together another strong game with strong, crisp, decisive throws. Of the six incompletions, three were drops and one was a spike. Unfortunately this often looked like practice, as he had little pressure with the Eagles playing a majority of players who won’t even make the team on defense when Jones was in the game.

You can’t fault him for his competition though, and as Warren Sharp points out in the tweet below, Jones has had positive outcomes in his playing time this preseason.

Fantasy implications

Jones plays a style of football that fits Bill Belichick’s offensive tendencies. He gets the ball out quickly and is accurate. He can turn the passing game into an extension of the running game and has shown accuracy deep when needed. Last week Kristian Wilkerson dropped a would be touchdown on a deep pass and this week N’Keal Harry dropped a long gaineron another well thrown deep ball.

Unfortunately for Jones, Cam Newton played well and we’ve yet to see Jones against a first team defense. Next week when they face the Giants, it will be their last preseason game. If we have a similar result as this week, it may be tough for Jones to leap frog Newton before Week 1.
