William Byron claims NASCAR pole to set starting lineup for 2021 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard

The NASCAR Cup Series is headed back to Indy this week for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. We’ll update through qualifying until we’ve got the full racing order for Sunday’s race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

POLE UPDATE: William Byron has claimed the pole and Chase Briscoe will join him on the front row.

UPDATE: The first round of qualifying is a wrap and the following 12 will compete for the pole and the next 11 positions in the starting lineup.

NASCAR closes out a two-race weekend in Indianapolis with the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. This Cup Series race will take place at the road course, replacing the traditional Brickyard 400.

The other change for this year is the return of qualifying. NASCAR has cut back qualifying this year to just a handful of tracks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Indianapolis road course is one of them.

Sunday’s race is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and is preceded by qualifying at 9 a.m. Each of the 41 drivers entered in the race will run a lap on the course. The Xfinity Series then had the 12 fastest drivers run a second lap to determine the pole and next 11 spots. If a driver has to change cars following qualifying but before the green flag drops at 1 p.m., they will be bumped to the back of the pack.

Heading into qualifying, Chase Elliott is the favorite to win the race at DraftKings Sportsbook, installed at +220. He’s followed by Kyle Larson (+350), Martin Truex, Jr. (+550), Kyle Busch (+900), Denny Hamlin (+1100), and Christopher Bell and Austin Cindric (both +1800).
