UPDATE: This injury article is from the preseason. In Week 1 of the regular season, David Montgomery had his hand or finger evaluated by the training staff and went to the locker room. He has since returned to action.
The Chicago Bears sent out most of their starters in preseason Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, but at least one has seen his day end early.
Running back David Montgomery limped off the field after one play and reporter Patrick Finley tweeted that his day appears to be done. Finley said Montgomery out his helmet down and the injury “doesn’t appear to be any serious medical thing, though.”
Montgomery had one rush for three yards and backup Damien Williams has come on in his stead. The Bears depth chart behind Montgomery and Williams includes Khalil Herbert, Ryan Nall, Artavis Pierce, and CJ Marable. Tarik Cohen is on the PUP list.
Last season, Montgomery rushed 247 times for 1,070 yards with eight touchdowns. He also caught 54 of 68 targets for 438 yards and two touchdowns. Cohen only played three games while Cordarrelle Patterson ended up the most prolific of the backup running backs, rushing 64 times for 232 yards.
Damien Williams opted out of the 2020 season and then was released this past March as the Chiefs moved on to first round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire last season. He should emerge as a significant presence behind Montgomery.
