Tracking MLB betting action for Sunday, August 1st

Sunday’s MLB action brings several high-profile matchups with it, including the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays squaring off Sunday night and San Francisco Giants meeting the Houston Astros. Deadline acquisition Kyle Gibson will be on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies when they play in-state rivals Pittsburgh Pirates.

MLB picks for Sunday, August 1st

Kyle Gibson under 4.5 strikeouts vs. Pirates (-110)

In six of his last nine outings, Gibson has 5 strikeouts or fewer. The Pirates are one of the best teams in baseball at not striking out. Expect Gibson to have a strong game, but he likely will not rack up the Ks in this one.

Marcus Stroman to win vs. Reds (+160)

Stroman has been inconsistent for the New York Mets this season, but pitched eight shutout innings the last time he faced the Reds a couple weeks ago. The Mets starter is 1-3 in his last four decisions, but the one win came against Sunday’s opponent.

Kris Bryant over 0.5 home runs vs. Astros (+500)

Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez hit home runs in the first games with their new teams, so it seems right for Bryant to do the same for the San Francisco Giants. This is more of a storyline than an exact science when it comes to betting, but at +500 there’s a high reward. Two former Cubs are already showing why fans are upset at the deadline selloff. Can Bryant add to it?

Rays over 4.5 runs vs. Red Sox (-125)

In the last three games, the Rays have scored seven or more runs. Go back further and Tampa Bay has scored five or more runs in 10 of its last 15 games. Expect the team to keep up its scoring rate against the division rival Red Sox.
