After a rocky start with a 3-0 loss to Sweden to open its Olympic campaign, the USWNT has been solid since. The Americans followed up that loss with a 6-1 thumping of New Zealand. They secured second place in Group G with a 0-0 draw against Australia and booked their ticket to the knockout rounds. They met Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Friday and went on to win 4-2 in penalties after a 2-2 result at full time , good enough to secure their spot in the semifinals. Sam Mewis and Lynn Williams each scored a goal and assisted on each other’s goals.

Canada finished in second place in Group E, just behind Great Britain. The Canadians only won once in the group stage and ended their other two games in draws, both 1-1 results against Japan and Great Britain. They were unable to find the back of the net in their quarterfinal match against Brazil, so while that ended 0-0 after full time, Canada edged Brazil in a penalty shootout 4-3.
