The San Diego Padres appeared to be on the verge of landing Washington Nationals star pitcher Max Scherzer. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers have swooped in with hopes of making an even bigger deal.
The Dodgers and Nationals are negotiating a massive deal that would send Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner to LA in exchange for several of the top prospects in the Dodgers farm system. Jon Heyman is reporting the Dodgers would send pitcher Josiah Gray and catcher Keibert Ruiz as part of a bigger package of prospects. MLB.com ranks Ruiz and Gray as the Dodgers top two minor league prospects.
Gray had a 2.87 ERA over 15.2 innings pitched in the minors this season and had stumbled over two appearances covering eight innings in the majors this past week. He has a 6.75 ERA in his current brief MLB appearance. Ruiz was scratched from Triple-A Oklahoma City’s lineup on Thursday. In 206 minor league at-bats this season, he has a slash line of .311/.381/.631.
