Christian Yelich tests positive for Covid-19, placed on injured list

Milwaukee Brewers OF Christian Yelich has tested positive for Covid-19 and has been placed on the injured list. Yelich is on the Covid IL though Will Sammon of The Athletic notes Yelich is fully vaccinated. He is expected to miss a minimum of 10 days from his positive test. After contact tracing, Jace Peterson has also been placed on Covid IL. Peterson will miss at least one week. Yelich is said to have mild symptoms despite being vaccinated.

The Brewers’ OF depth will be tested a bit during this stretch with Yelich and Peterson sidelined. Lorenzo Cain is also out, so the healthy OFers right now are Avisail Garcia, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Tyrone Taylor. Luis Urias will likely have to take over at 3B with Peterson out. This news also comes just a few days away from the MLB Trade Deadline, which is at 4 p.m. ET on Friday.

The Brewers have a 7.0 game lead for first place in the NL Central ahead of the Cincinnati Reds. Milwaukee has a big enough cushion in first to withstand the loss of Yelich and Peterson for a bit. Yelich, a former NL MVP, is having a down year anyway due to injuries. He’s batting .235 with just 6 HRs and 28 RBI.
