The New York Giants almost made the playoffs and won the division in Joe Judge’s first season as head coach. But that dream did not come fruition as they finished in second place with a 6-10 record. New York might’ve won the division if they didn’t lose star RB Saquon Barkley to a torn ACL.
However, the Giants’ offense should be more explosive this season with a healthy Barkley, along with the new additions of WRs Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney. But even with those two new wideouts and a solid defense, the Giants’ fate this season will be tied to QB Daniel Jones.
New York Giants Super Bowl 56 odds: +6600
For the Giants to make the Super Bowl, they need Barkley to stay healthy and for Jones to take his play to another level. The former first round quarterback out of Duke has been less than stellar in his first two seasons in the NFL. “Danny Dimes” hasn’t necessarily lost New York games, but he hasn’t elevated his game to help them win either.
Last season, Jones completed 62.5% of his passes for 2,943 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 touchdowns. A lot of people were quick to criticize the game of Dwayne Haskins, who was selected nine picks after Jones, but the former Duke standout leaves a lot to be desired. If the Giants can’t make the playoffs with a solid offensive line, a wide receiver unit with a true number 1 in Golladay, and a star in Barkley, then the Giants need to look for a new guy under center.
However, even if Jones struggles early on, the Giants have a quality defense that has talent at all three levels. New York had the 11th-best run defense, only allowing 111.4 yards per game and ninth-best scoring defense (22.3 ppg) in 2020. They added to their defense with the re-signing of Leonard Williams and in free agency grabbed Adoree Jackson and Danny Shelton. In the NFL draft, New York selected Azeez Ojulari in the second round and Elberson Smith in the fourth round to help bolster their pass rush. The Giants could be in the race for first in the NFC East or in last place by time December rolls around. If they can win the division, anything is possible in January.
