Denmark gets knockout round slot after late flurry in 4-1 win over Russia

Denmark needed to beat Russia by a big margin and hope Belgium could take care of Finland in order to qualify for the knockout stage. The Danes got the results they needed.

Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle scored late goals to give Denmark a 4-1 victory over Russia to finish with 3 points in the group stage. The margin also gave Denmark a goal differential of +1, enough to overtake Finland after Belgium won the match 2-0.

The Danes struggled early in group stage with star Christian Eriksen collapsing in the first half of the first match. He was eventually taken to a hospital and stabilized, but Denmark never looked the same in a 1-0 loss to Finland. The team had a great start against Belgium, but Kevin De Bruyne came on as a substitute to take a win away from Denmark.

Against Russia, Denmark came out firing early. Mikkel Damsgaard broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with a brilliant finish and Yussuf Poulsen capitalized on a bad pass in Russia’s defensive half to double the lead. Russia got on the board, but Denmark’s late goals eventually sealed the win and a knockout round spot.

Denmark will take on Wales in the knockout round June 26.
