Austria secures a spot in the knockout stage with a 1-0 win over Ukraine. Cristoph Baumgartner’s goal was the difference in the match for Austria, who needed a win to ensure progression to the knockout stage. Ukraine could’ve advanced with either a win or a draw, but will now have to wait to see how the third-place process plays out.

Things started off well for Austria as Marcel Sabitzer made several attempts on goal early. Baumgartner eventually found the back of the net in the 21st minute after a great cross from David Alaba. Ukraine was unable to get into a rhythm for much of the first half, but had a strong chance on goal shortly after Austria scored. That was the team’s lone shot on goal.

The possession stats were even at 50-50, but Austria was far more efficient going forward. It had 18 shots to Ukraine’s five and that ultimately proved to be the difference in the contest.

Austria finishes second in Group C with the result and will face Italy in the knockout round on June 26.
