Despite a couple missteps (and one outright robbery), the gold medal in basketball still goes through the United States.
15 of the 19 gold medals issued have gone to Team USA, and it should be 16. But how many players will want to put in a full team training camp, warmup tour, as well as two weeks isolated from family and friends in Japan? Remember many of those that would normally join the players won’t be able to attend in Tokyo.
July 5 is the deadline for USA Basketball to submit the Olympic roster, and that’s only three days before the NBA Finals begin. There’s a list of 57 qualified players, but many of them have already indicated they won’t be making the trip. LeBron James is out with an ankle and a blockbuster movie premiere, Anthony Davis has a groin injury, Zion Williamson broke his finger... and there’s plenty more.
It does look like Damian Lillard and Draymond Green will make it to training camp in Las Vegas, but right now they’re the first two on board. Those two and 10 guys from the G-League might be enough to get on the podium anyway, but it’s not guarantee.
The USA will want to field the strongest team it can after flaming out at the 2019 Basketball World Cup in China. There the Americans finished seventh with a team that included Donovan Mitchell, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Kemba Walker.
Here are the complete odds from DraftKings Sportsbook for who will win the men’s basketball gold medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.
