Fantasy implications of Saints signing RB Stevie Scott as an UDFA

The New Orleans Saints have signed Indiana running back Stevie Scott as an UDFA following the 2021 draft. Will he be a fantasy football asset to start his career?

3The New Orleans Saints signed UDFA running back Stevie Scott to close out the 2021 NFL Draft. He joins running backs Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray on the depth chart.

In the Indiana Hoosiers’ breakthrough season in 2020, Scott was a big part of the offense, though his numbers were a bit underwhelming. He rushed for 561 yards in eight games and finished with 3.6 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 86 yards.

Fantasy football impact

Rookie

Scott does not figure to have a significant role in this Saints offense as a rookie behind Kamara and Murray. If he is a part of the team’s plans in 2021, it would likely come via goal line work with his big frame at 6-feet, 225 pounds. With Scott’s running style and limited speed, he is unlikely to rack up a ton of yards no matter how many carries he gets. His ceiling is a touchdown vulture in Year 1.

Long-term

Even for a power back, Scott does not have very good speed to get around the edge or go for a big gainer, so he is unlikely to see a ton of explosive plays. Scott could find a successful career as a short-yardage back, which is his biggest strength. His power and ability to fall forward could lead to plenty of touchdowns from inside the 5-yard line, though that can be difficult to rely on consistently in fantasy football.
