Fantasy implications of Colts drafting WR Mike Strachan with No. 229 pick

Indianapolis Colts drafted former Charleston (WV) wide receiver Mike Strachan in 2021 NFL Draft. He joins a depth chart that includes T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman Jr., Zach Pascal, Parris Campbell, and Dezmon Patmon.

Strachan did not play this season because of on-going COVID-19 pandemic, but had a great 2019 season for Charleston (WV). The Division II All-American had 78 receptions for 1,319 yards and 19 touchdowns. With that type of production, its no wonder why the 6-foot-5 WR was on the radar of NFL teams. Strachan is a bigger wide receiver and knows how to use his height to make plays. However, he just isn’t a jump ball wideout as he can run good routes.

Fantasy football impact

Rookie

Strachan is a long shot to make the roster as a seventh-round pick, especially with the Colts stacked at wide receiver. However, he would be the tallest wideout on the roster and could be a playmaker inside the red zone. We saw how Indianapolis use TE Mo Alie-Cox inside the redzone and put him in position to stretch the field and make plays. There aren’t many DBs who will be able to jump with Strachan in a one-on-one situation.

Long-term

With Hilton getting older, Pittman Jr. could be primed to be the Colts’ No. 1 wide receiver as soon as the 2022 season. Therefore, it could be an open competition for the No. 2 WR spot between Campbell, Pascal (if re-signed), and Strachan if he makes the team. He can make plays and showed at the D2 level that he can be a go-to guy. Maybe he becomes a WR3 in fantasy football down the road.
