Fantasy implications of Raiders signing RB Garrett Groshek as a UDFA

The Oakland Raiders have signed Wisconsin RB Garrett Groshek as a UDFA following the 2021 draft. Will he be a fantasy football asset to start his career?

The Las Vegas Raiders signed former Wisconsin Badgers running back Garrett Groshek, who went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft. He joins a depth chart that includes Josh Jacobs, Kenyan Drake, Jalen Richard and Theo Riddick.

As a senior in the 2020 college football season, Groshek played in six games and rushed for 300 yards with a pair of rushing touchdowns on 4.5 yards per carry. He caught 22 passes for 119 yards with two additional scores. Groshek tested positive for COVID-19 early in the season and was not as effective in the Badgers’ offense as he had been the previous three seasons.

Fantasy football impact

Rookie

Groshek is highly unlikely to make a significant impact in his rookie season, and his main goal should be to impress the coaching staff so much that he can make the team or be a part of the practice squad. He proved to be an effective runner at Wisconsin and was productive out of the backfield as a pass catcher.

Long-term

It’s difficult to expect a ton of success for Groshek in the long term. His ceiling is likely a third down back at the professional level, but he has a long way to go in order to see the field consistently. This is an important offseason for his development as he looks to crack the Raiders roster as a rookie with plenty of factors stacked against him.
