The speed horse in the 19-deep field for the 147th Kentucky Derby found a path, and Medina Spirit is the winner of the 2021 Run for the Roses. Bob Baffert claims the victory as trainer. John Velazquez was the jockey on the Zedan Racing Stables Inc. horse and won his fourth career Derby.
Medina broke free from the gate and had the lead after a furlong, and nearly never relinquished it. He even managed to bring his gate neighbor, the 25-1 Mandaloun, along for the ride because of his great break and pure speed. Mandaloun briefly had the lead as the field made the clubhouse turn, but he was overtaken by Velazquez and Spirit once again at the top of the stretch and trailed by a half-length at the wire.
The favorite Essential Quality was bumped just coming out of the starting gate, and just didn’t have the kick down the stretch, finishing in fourth place. Mandaloun finished second and Hot Rod Charlie finished third.
