NBA MVP Tracker: Giannis moves up board after 47-point game

The back-to-back MVP has jumped to 7/1 to win NBA MVP for a third straight season. Does he have a shot to beat out Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid? Let’s take a look.

The NBA MVP race this season would be the most exciting ride at Six Flags. We’ve seen four different players throughout the season as the favorite to win the award: Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Joel Embiid and now Nikola Jokic. The odds favor Jokic at the moment with injuries slowing down both Embiid and James. Doncic has had a good season by most standards but the Dallas Mavericks’ struggles have left him on the outside of the MVP race looking in at 16/1. The player making the biggest move after last week is Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The reigning back-to-back MVP for the Milwaukee Bucks is coming off a 47-point performance against fellow MVP contender Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers. The Bucks have arguably been the best team in the NBA since the middle of February at 16-4 in their past 20 games. Milwaukee is only 1.5 games out of first place in the East. If the Bucks can win the East for another season, Giannis keeps having big-time games, there’s no reason why he can’t close the gap on Jokic and James Harden (+550) in the MVP race.

Jokic is far-and-away the favorite and it may be difficult for Giannis to gain ground on him. The Denver Nuggets keep winning games and also have a shot to finish top 3 in the West after hovering toward the bottom of the playoff picture for a while. Giannis would likely need to play out of his skull, the Bucks win the East, and the Nuggets drop down a bit while Jokic puts up pedestrian numbers. It’s a long-shot, but not out of the question with another month and a half of the regular season left.
